ER Trip Number 5...

...and another mostly sleepless night in the land of being mama.

Last night Pearl and I made yet another trip to the ER. This time, it was because she was being, well, 2.

She and Lola like to play a game where Pearl is the puppy. She likes to put things in her mouth, pant, be petted, given commands, etc. Adorable. However, she also likes to be chased while playing puppy, and especially, dangerously, likes to put "bones" - i.e. anything long and pokey - in her mouth and be chased. Of course I put a stop to that every time I see it, but last night as soon as I took one thing out of her mouth and reminded the girls that 1. we don't play chasing games in the house, and 2. don't run with long poky things in your mouth, Pearl found yet another long pokey thing to put in her mouth. This thing was a wooden screw-type piece of a puzzle, about 6 inches long, with a flat edge. Like this: http://www.oompa.com/baby-toys/category.cgi?item=PL5335

She tripped and fell hard, with that damned thing in her mouth. It's a bloody miracle she didn't puncture her sinues through the roof of her mouth! As it was, she scraped the hell out of the roof of her mouth, smashed her nose pretty good, and gave herself a fat lip that's bruised but not too puffy today. The amounts of blood that gushed from her wounds was astounding. Gross, even. It made me queasy all night, just the sight of it all. My poor baby. And of course Lola witnessed it all - the fall, the blood, the freak out.

I just have a thing about mouth injuries, and of course I was worried all night about her breathing, which was occasionally gurgly from mucous, but regular. She couldn't nurse all night, and she's still not nursing well. The scrape goes almost to her tonsils. She is exceptionally fortunate. And man, the blood. I hope to never see blood gushing from my child's mouth ever again.

We went ahead and gave her some acetaminophen for her pain, and applied some topical numbing pharmaceutical to her injured area, but have opted for comfrey tea to help repair the soft tissue damage and echinacea tincture to help prevent infection. Today she is drinking (finally), and nursing a little. Last night she was in too much pain to do much of anything - including lying down. It's just terrible to nurse your little one through physical trauma. And I am getting much too experience at it.

In light of all the other stresses in our life right now, I'm ready for no more surprises. Hear me, deities? I'm ready for some calm, boring days. Or at least some serious protective charms for the kids...

We're back-for now

We're back. Dad is stable, but has been better.

I will just make a few general statements that should cover my recent trip south:
Family dynamics in a family with several control freaks can be ugly.
There were valid reasons I moved so far away.
I wish I lived closer to my mom and dad right now.
